Concrete crack fillers and why we use them

Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials in the world, known for its strength, durability, and versatility. However, even the strongest concrete can develop cracks over time due to exposure to the elements, changes in temperature, and other environmental factors. These cracks not only detract from the appearance of the concrete but can also weaken its structural integrity, making it important to repair them as soon as possible.

One of the most effective ways to repair cracks in concrete is by using a concrete crack filler. This is a material that is applied to the crack, filling it in and restoring the strength and appearance of the concrete. There are many different types of concrete crack fillers on the market, but one of the best is Gripset C26.

Gripset C-26 is an innovative liquid compound providing hard-wearing, high abrasion resistant, waterproof crack sealing to concrete substrates exposed to varying climatic conditions, UV light, and foot and vehicular traffic. Possessing flexible and fast-drying properties, Gripset C-26 enables vehicular traffic after 20 minutes of application.

Features & Benefits
• Solvent free, non-toxic and free of dangerous odours
• Trafficable – pedestrian and vehicular traffic
• Durable, hard-wearing finish
• Fast drying properties
• Excellent adhesion and penetration properties
• Excellent crack bridging properties
• Forms a flexible non tacky film
• Excellent water resistance
• Non-slip finish
• Resistant to sulphates, ground salts, diluted alkalis

Application
Gripset C-26 is suitable for Commercial, Industrial, Rural and Maintenance applications

Uses
• Rejuvenating oxidised asphalt
• Re-surfacing pitted asphalt layers with an enhanced weather
• protective coating
• Airfields
• Secondary roads, residential streets and car parks
• Bicycle paths, footpaths, laneways
• Asphalt driveway surfaces
• Repairing existing asphalt sport surfaces

Surface Preparation
Surfaces must be prepared thoroughly before commencing application. All substrates must be structurally sound, smooth, stable, dry, and clean.
All surfaces are to be free, loose material, de-bonded coatings, curing membranes/agents, release agents, wax residues, foreign particles, laitance, algae and moss, grime, oils, animal fats or grease remains.

Structurally unsound layers and surface contaminants are to be mechanically removed by abrasive blasting, blast tracking, grinding or equivalent methods.

Application & Coverage
• Before applying the product, slowly stir the product to ensure a homogenous consistency
• Gripset C-26 can be applied by Enviro Crack Sealing unit; spout pouring equipment or squeeze bottles. Coverage will depend on the depth and width of the crack; as a guide, 1 litre will cover approximately 60m in length at 2mm width and 5mm depth.
• It is recommended to check the surface condition of the seal after 24 hours. If any signs of shrinkage or sinking are evident, re-apply Gripset C-26 to the surface until the joint is filled and all shrinkage areas are covered

Important
• Gripset C-26 is not recommended to fill cracks wider than 15mm
• Concrete joints with a depth greater than 40mm require a foam backing rod inside the depth of the joint before filling

Remember that although using a good concrete crack filler, there are no guarantees that a crack will not reappear or new cracks develop after a concrete crack filler has been applied to cracked concrete.

For people needing concrete resurfacing, the surface preparation stage is the most important, as you can have the best products and it may look fantastic immediately after applying a decorative concrete coating, however, if the surface preparation was not done meticulously, cracks may reappear.
