Have you noticed a white, chalky film forming on your driveway, patio, or concrete walls? That’s called efflorescence, and while it’s common in coastal climates like the Gold Coast, it can make your concrete look aged, patchy, and dull.
At Barefoot Concrete Pty Ltd, we’re the local experts in efflorescence removal and concrete restoration. With the right treatment and preventative care, we can bring your concrete surfaces back to life—and help you keep them that way.
What is efflorescence?
Efflorescence is a white, powdery deposit that appears on the surface of concrete, brick, and stone. It forms when moisture draws soluble salts from within the concrete or surrounding soil to the surface. Once the water evaporates, the salts are left behind.
On the Gold Coast, where high humidity and salt-laden air are common, efflorescence is a frequent issue for both residential and commercial properties.
Common causes:
- Moisture seepage through concrete
- Poor drainage or runoff near concrete surfaces
- Saltwater exposure or sea air
- Lack of proper sealing or vapour barriers
How to remove efflorescence from concrete
Step 1: Dry Brushing
Start by letting the concrete fully dry, then use a stiff nylon or wire brush to scrub away loose white deposits. Vacuum or sweep the area clean afterwards.
💡 Tip from Barefoot Concrete: Avoid using a pressure washer at this stage—it can force salts deeper into the concrete pores.
Step 2: Rinse with Clean Water
Rinse the area gently with clean, low-pressure water to remove any remaining dust or salt. Allow the surface to dry completely. If white stains reappear, it’s a sign that moisture is still drawing salts to the surface—repeat brushing and rinsing as needed.
Step 3: Treat Stubborn Efflorescence with TED
For heavier or older deposits, you may need to use a TED—The Efflorescence Destroyer. TED removes efflorescence and rust marks from porous materials, including stone, concrete, brick and grout.
You’ll need:
- White vinegar (for light stains) or diluted muriatic acid (1 part acid to 10 parts water)
- A stiff brush
- Protective gear (gloves, goggles, mask)
- Baking soda (for neutralising the acid afterwards)
How to apply:
- Pre-wet the surface with clean water.
- Apply the acid mixture evenly using a watering can or sprayer.
- Scrub the area thoroughly with a brush.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Neutralise with a baking soda solution (½ cup per gallon of water), then rinse again.
⚠️ Always add acid to water, never the other way around. If you’re unsure or uncomfortable handling chemicals, contact Barefoot Concrete’s efflorescence removal specialists for a professional, safe clean.
Step 4: Seal and protect your concrete
Once your concrete is clean, it’s important to seal it properly to prevent future efflorescence. At Barefoot Concrete Pty Ltd, we use premium-grade, breathable concrete sealers that repel water while allowing vapour to escape—protecting your surfaces from moisture damage, salt, and stains.
Our sealing services help:
- Prevent efflorescence from returning
- Protect concrete from salt air and moisture intrusion
- Enhance colour and finish
- Extend the lifespan of your surfaces
Why is efflorescence common on the Gold Coast?
Due to our coastal climate and high humidity, Gold Coast concrete surfaces are more susceptible to moisture-related issues than those found inland. Properties near the beach or with poor drainage often experience persistent efflorescence.
That’s why regular maintenance and sealing from a local concrete care expert are key to long-term protection.
